Old Palm OS Software I Use and Abuse

I have not even touched a device with Palm's new webOS, so this page is only about the old Palm OS, which I like despite its shortcomings. One crucial application for anyone who uses Macs and Palms is Missing Sync for Palm OS, which syncs your Palm with your Mac. It puts Palm's own synchronization software to utter shame. For Japanese display and input, you must have J-OS. You can display Japanese with CJKOS, and even open Unicode Japanese documents, but it cannot effectively input Japanese.

Frequently

DateBk6 enhances the built-in calendar and to-do programs and TealPhone gives the address book similar treatment. I read plenty of ASCII-only RSS feeds in QuickNews and load the complete articles and pages in the browser Xiino, which still works but is no longer sold. For finances, StockManager and SplashMoney are great. For keeping track of passwords and more, SplashID is great; JFile is a great all-purpose database. PAdict and Dokusha are probably all you need for Japanese study. For reading ebooks, I like eReader Pro and periodically convert Project Gutenberg public domain ebooks into the .pdb format with eBook Studio for Mac.

Nice to Have

Métro guides me through public transit networks. For online networks, enjoy FTP with VFSFTP or edit text and HTML with DragonEdit. The best Palm email client is SnapperMail, but the free Gmail is excellent if you have a Gmail account. For multimedia, including cubic QTVRs, Kinoma and (music only) PocketTunes. Of course there are many other great programs that I haven't mentioned.

GuruGuru

For reviewing things, especially restaurants, the freeware GuruGuru is very handy. Its files require both a .prc and .pdb. Here are some I've made, some requiring J-OS or CJKOS to see the Japanese content: Japan Lodging (prc and pdb), Japan Sites (prc and pdb), Tokushima Eateries (prc and pdb), Tokyo Eateries (prc and pdb), Tokyo Parks (prc and pdb).
